DC United 2, Minnesota United FC 1 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

They endured quite a scare, but D.C. United weathered a counterattacking display from Minnesota United FC on Wednesday, overturning a deficit to win 2-1 at Audi Field and keep their hopes for the MLS Cup Playoffs alive.

After a battling but futile first half for both teams, Minnesota took the lead just after the halftime break on a counterattack, with Angelo Rodriguez opening his MLS account in his fifth appearance for the Loons.

Shortly before the hour mark, D.C.'s prospects appeared to go from bad to worse, with goalkeeper Bill Hamid picking up an injury, but he continued in the game despite looking less than 100 percent healthy for the rest of the game, although he made a key stop after the injury.

D.C. got back into the game, however, as Ulises Segura made a nice turn with the ball in the box and slotted in his second goal of the season in the 65th minute to make it 1-1. Four minutes later, substitute Darren Mattocks tapped in a low cross to put the home side ahead 2-1, completing the comeback and landing the Eastern Conference team a massive three points.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Credit to D.C., who looked sluggish for most of the first hour, but still found the reserves to fight their way back for a result. The win doesn't ease the pressure, per se, but it does keep them in the running for the postseason. For Minnesota, the good part was Rodriguez, a Designated Player who has looked off the pace so far in MLS, got on the board.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Mattocks got in the right spot and turned in the goal D.C. United desperately needed.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Luciano Acosta set up both of D.C.'s goals, and continued his strong run of form with key plays to help deliver a much-needed win.
